Millions of people in China grew up with Roco Kingdom. For most players in Europe and the US, it's a brand-new name that popped up at Gamescom 2026 with a blue-and-white mascot and a lot of Pokémon comparisons. This guide covers what the game actually is, how it plays and what to do before your first session.
What kind of game is Roco Kingdom?
Think of it as three games stitched together. First, an open world you explore freely, with forests, coasts, mountains and towns where wild Jinies live in their own habitats. Second, a creature collector: you catch Jinies, train them, evolve them and build a team. Third, a school life sim: your character is a student at a magic academy, with classes, tournaments and a path from novice to grand master.
On top of that, you get a home to decorate, a plantation your Jinies help run, and plenty of co-op: you can ride Jinies with friends and share gathering rewards.
Who are you in Roco Kingdom?
You're a Roco, the name the series gives to its young mages. Rocos study at the academy, learn to command Jinies and take part in academy events and tournaments. You can match your outfit to your favourite Jini, which is half the fun for a lot of players.
What are Jinies?
Jinies are the creatures of Carosia. There are more than 400 of them at launch, and no two individuals are exactly alike: every Jini has its own height, build and weight. Some also appear in rare prismatic or alternate-colour forms, so it's worth checking twice when something shiny walks past.
You catch them with Buddy Pods, the game's equivalent of a capture ball. How you treat them matters, too: well-cared-for Jinies are friendlier, while mistreated ones can run away. Our guide to catching Jinies goes into detail.
How do battles work?
Battles are turn-based. Each Jini knows up to four moves and has the usual stats: health, defence, speed, physical and elemental attack. The twist is energy: some moves are free, stronger ones cost energy, and you sometimes have to spend a turn resting to recharge. That makes every fight a bit of a resource puzzle rather than a damage race.
The game uses an 18-class counter system. The core triangle is easy to remember: fire beats grass, grass beats water, water beats fire. In player-versus-player battles, Jini levels are equalised, so strategy and team building decide the winner, not hours played.
Which starter should you choose?
You begin by choosing one of three starters: Sparka (fire), Cerulla (water) or Meevy (grass). Dimo, the series mascot, travels with you too. If you can't decide, read our Sparka vs Cerulla vs Meevy comparison.
Is Roco Kingdom free?
Yes. The game is free-to-play on every platform, and the developers have said every Jini at launch can be obtained by playing, with no pay-only creatures and no gacha wall for Jinies. Spending is expected to focus on cosmetics. More in our free-to-play explainer.

Five tips for your first hours
-
Don't rush the main path. The open world rewards wandering: different habitats hold different Jinies.
-
Learn the triangle early. Fire, grass, water. Bring at least one answer to each.
-
Watch your energy. Spamming your strongest move leaves you resting at the worst moment.
-
Treat your Jinies well. It isn't just flavour: happy Jinies behave better.
-
Play with a friend. Shared gathering rewards make co-op more efficient, not just more fun.
